More about the Athletics 50p
Issued as one of the 29 Olympic 50p designs to commemorate the games in London 2012. Each 50p features a different Olympic sport.
Designed by nine-year-old Florence Jackson, the Athletics 50p coin was the first ever Royal Mint coin to be designed by a child. Florence won the opportunity in 2009 after taking part in a Blue Peter Coin Design Competition. It proved to be one of the show’s most popular competitions ever, with Florence’s design beating over 17,000 other entries.

The 2019 Blue Peter version
The first issue of the Athletics design was struck by the Royal Mint with the date 2009, but was only available in a special Blue Peter presentation pack, never being released into general circulation. The coin was finally issued for public circulation two years later with the date of 2011 to commemorate the 2012 Olympics.
