More about the Judo 50p
Issued as one of the 29 Olympic 50p designs to commemorate the games in London 2012. Each 50p features a different Olympic sport.
The winning designer for the Judo 50p was David Cornell, a painter and sculptor from Bexhill-on-Sea.
Judo was added to the Olympics in Tokyo 1964, having been established as a sport in Japan in 1882. The contestant must score an ‘Ippon’ order to win. This is awarded for a throw that places the opponent on their back with a combination of strength, speed and control.
