More about the Wrestling 50p
Issued as one of the 29 Olympic 50p designs to commemorate the games in London 2012. Each 50p features a different Olympic sport.
The winning designer for the Wrestling 50p was Roderick Enriquez, a Filipino-British national, who designed a coin to represent the ancient and modern aspects of wrestling. Featuring wrestlers in action, in a stadium that could be either ancient or modern.
Being one of the original sports in the Olympic Games in Greece, 776 BC, the original wrestling style was Greco-Roman. The later style of freestyle wrestling grew in popularity across the UK and USA. Both the ancient and modern styles of wrestling are now Olympic events.
