More about the Basketball 50p
Issued as one of the 29 Olympic 50p designs to commemorate the games in London 2012. Each 50p features a different Olympic sport.
The winning designer for the basketball 50p was Sarah Payne, a greeting card and toy designer from Cardiff. Her aim was to capture the movement of the game and use the recognisable ball texture to make it obvious without including the word basketball itself.
Despite being invented as far back as 1891, basketball didn’t make it’s Olympic debut until the 1936 games in Berlin. In the 2012 games the USA showed dominance and won both the men’s and women’s competitions.

Hi I have one of these coins but it looks like the player on the left hand side has been painted any idea why?
